Glossary

The vocabulary,in plain language.

Agentic marketing arrived with a dictionary's worth of new terms. Here's what they actually mean — written to be useful, not to sell.

Terms, defined.

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?

MCP is an open standard that lets AI assistants use external tools and data sources. An MCP server exposes capabilities — like reading an ad account or proposing a campaign change — and any MCP-capable client (Claude, ChatGPT, Slack, editors like Cursor) can use them. It's the standard that turned chat assistants into operators.

What is a marketing MCP?

An MCP server purpose-built for marketing operations: it connects AI clients to ad platforms, analytics and search data so they can analyze performance and propose changes. A governed marketing MCP — Offloda's category — adds the safety layer: human approval on writes, multi-tenant isolation and an audit log.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

The practice of earning presence in AI-generated answers — the responses ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features give instead of a list of links. GEO covers measuring where a brand appears, diagnosing why it doesn't, and strengthening the signals engines cite: content depth, structure, schema and entity clarity.

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

Effectively a synonym for GEO, emphasizing the destination: answer engines. Some practitioners use AEO for question-shaped content optimization specifically. The job is the same — be the answer, not just a result.

What is AI SEO?

The accessible umbrella term for optimizing visibility in AI-driven search — both AI answers (GEO/AEO) and the AI-reshaped classic results page (AI Overviews). If GEO is the practitioner's term, AI SEO is the doorway most people walk in through.

What are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews are the generated summaries Google places above classic results; AI Mode is Google's fuller conversational search experience. Both change what 'ranking' means — a page can rank #1 in blue links yet be absent from the AI summary above them, which is why both need tracking.

What is agentic marketing?

Marketing operations where AI agents don't just recommend — they execute: analyzing accounts, drafting strategy and deploying changes. The critical design question is governance: agentic without a human gate is a liability, which is why governed platforms put an approval step on every write.

What are governed writes?

A write-safety model where every change to a live account passes a gate: the change is validated as a dry-run and shown as an exact diff, a human confirms it, high-risk actions require a second acknowledgement, and everything is logged. New campaigns launch paused, so going live is always a deliberate act.

What is a dry-run?

Executing a proposed change in validation mode — the platform checks it as if it were real and reports exactly what would change, without changing anything. It's the difference between 'the AI says this should work' and 'the platform confirms this will apply cleanly.'

What is a white-label marketing platform?

A platform an agency resells as its own product: the agency's logo, name, colors and domain across the workspace, dashboards, reports and client portal — the vendor's brand invisible to end clients. True white-label is architectural (per-tenant branding and isolation), not a logo swap.

What does multi-tenant mean?

One system serving many isolated customers ('tenants') — in agency terms, every client brand is its own tenant with its own data, connections and access rules, enforced at the database layer. Multi-tenancy is what makes it safe to run a book of clients on one platform.

What is Performance Max (PMax)?

Google's goal-driven campaign type that serves across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Maps from one campaign, driven by asset groups rather than keywords. Powerful and opaque — which is why asset-group-level analysis and governed edits matter.

What is Demand Gen?

Google's campaign type for visually-led prospecting across YouTube, Discover and Gmail — the successor surface for standalone Video and Display creation, built around audiences rather than search intent.

What is CBO (campaign budget optimization)?

A Meta setting where budget lives at the campaign level and Meta distributes it across ad sets automatically. It changes how ad sets must be created — an ad set under a CBO campaign carries no budget of its own, a distinction automation has to respect to avoid failed launches.

What is the local pack?

The map-with-listings block Google shows for local-intent queries — positions in it are driven by proximity, relevance and prominence (reviews, Business Profile health). For multi-location businesses it's the highest-value search real estate, and it's tracked per market, not nationally.

What is llms.txt?

A convention for describing a site to AI systems: a plain-text file at the site root summarizing what the site is and where its key content lives, making accurate citation easier for AI engines. A small, honest lever in the GEO toolkit — useful, not magic.

Vocabulary is the map. The platform is the territory.
